Integrity Commissioner Dismisses Complaint Regarding MLA Nunakput

(YELLOWKNIFE) Thursday, January 6, 2022 – The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly Integrity Commissioner, Mr. David Phillip Jones, Q.C. has investigated and dismissed a complaint lodged against the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Nunakput Jackie Jacobson.

The Integrity Commissioner received a complaint from the Board of Management alleging that the MLA, also a member of the Board of Management, failed to disclose a conflict of interest to the Board during a sensitive in camera Board of Management meeting on August 24, 2021, where personnel matters and a separate complaint about another MLA were discussed. As a result, the complaint alleged breaches of the Members’ Code of Conduct and the Legislative Assembly and Executive Council Act. This launched an investigation by the Integrity Commissioner that resulted in a dismissal of the Board of Management’s complaint.

As stated in the Legislative Assembly and Executive Council Act, the Integrity Commissioner is mandated to compile a report outlining the details of his investigation. The Act requires the report to be presented to the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly, the Members of the Legislative Assembly, and the public upon completion. As the Legislature will not sit until February, the Speaker has made the report public by way of news release (Attachment A).  As required by the Act, the report will also be tabled on the first day of the next sitting of the Legislative Assembly.
