What is Youth Parliament?
Youth Parliament is an exciting opportunity for Grade 9 and 10 students from across the Northwest Territories to experience life as an MLA. Held each spring at the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly in Yellowknife, this program provides students with hands-on learning about Consensus Government and the Legislative Assembly.
During the week, participants will:
- Research community concerns.
- Meet with their MLA to discuss issues affecting their riding.
- Write and deliver a Member's Statement.
- Learn how a Bill becomes law.
- Participate in a mock session and Question Period.
- Build new friendships and have lots of fun!
When is Youth Parliament?
Program Dates: April 27 – May 1, 2026
Travel Dates: Arrival April 26 | Departure May 2
Who can apply?
To be eligible for Youth Parliament, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a Grade 9 or 10 student in the Northwest Territories. Applications from other grades may be considered only if no eligible Grade 9 or 10 applications are received.
- Have not participated in Youth Parliament previously. Previous Youth Parliamentarians are not eligible to apply.
- Be available to attend Youth Parliament from April 27–May 1, 2026. Travel dates are April 26 (arrival) and May 2 (departure) for students traveling to Yellowknife.
All expenses are covered by the Legislative Assembly, including airfare, accommodation, meals, and scheduled extracurricular activities. However, students are responsible for bringing their own spending money for shopping or personal items during free time.
