YELLOWKNIFE (Monday, May 9, 2022) – The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly is pleased to announce that Youth Parliament 2022 begins today.
Nineteen high school students from across the Northwest Territories will take part in Youth Parliament, an educational outreach program hosted by the Honourable Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Frederick Blake Jr. During the program, students will assume the role of their respective Member of the Legislative Assembly and will participate in three days of meetings and briefings in preparation for the Youth Parliament Model Session on Thursday, May 12th.
The program educates NWT youth about consensus government, with an emphasis on the Assembly operations, its function and history, and the important role the institution holds in the NWT. Youth Parliament provides students with the opportunity to develop leadership skills, practice collaborative thinking, and form relationships with peers from other regions of the Northwest Territories.
The Youth Parliament 2022 Model Session will take place in the Chamber of the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, May 12th, at 1:30 p.m. The public and members of the Media are invited to view the Youth Parliament proceedings from the Public Gallery. The proceedings will also be available for viewing on the Assembly’s cable and satellite channels, website, and social media pages.
