In the 2018-2019 capital plan, we have major retrofits planned for 11 units in the Nunakput communities: 10 public housing units and one health unit. We are also, in 2019-2020, planning for five major retrofits and also looking at bringing in materials and labour to construct other market rental units for nurses and for teachers.
As I mentioned, I will continue to keep the Members apprised of the work that we are doing in all of the communities across the Northwest Territories. We also do have a new home program, where we are looking at creating 11 units across the Northwest Territories to get...
Most recently I had the opportunity to open the six-plex in Inuvik and also look at the work that was being done with a local contractor working under IRC. We are working towards a common goal, Mr. Speaker, and that goal is affordable, adequate, and suitable housing for the Inuvialuit people and the residents of the region.
That memorandum of agreement details the IRC and our role as the NWT Housing Corporation with respect to planning, construction, inspection, and other aspects of project implementation, and also confirms the arrangements to transfer the constructed asset to the NWT Housing...
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, it is always an honour to come and sit in the House and see the proceedings, and over the years, I haven't seen Ms. Donna Rogers here, so I would like to welcome her, from Inuvik, even though she is a constituent of Twin Lakes, and to welcome my constituent from Boot Lake, Ms. Judy McLeod.
We also have some special guests in the audience here, Mr. Howie Miller, well-renowned Canadian comedian, so welcome. I know he is passing through from Iqaluit with his wife, Jen Houseman, and I would also just like to recognize Mr. Deneze Nakehk'o, a long-time friend and...
I will ensure that our NWT Housing Corporation President-CEO does get in touch with the Bureau of Statistics to determine whether that survey is going to be completed this year or not. Thank you, Mr. Speaker, and I will get back to the Member on that question.
I agree. As Members of the Legislative Assembly, we all have these issues of people who are on the waiting list. We also, like I mentioned, have a good working relationship with the Department of ECE. We have a lot of programs in place, such as major retrofits. We have had good partnerships with the Salt River First Nations, the IRC, the Fort Good Hope band, and we want to make sure that we address that waiting list. Our Northern Pathways to Housing is another good initiative in transitioning some of our homeless people into more public housing units. We have got a long list of work that we...
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, the Northwest Territories Housing Corporation has been working collaboratively with the Tlicho Government to address critical housing issues in the Tlicho region. In order to meet this government’s commitments to address the cost of living, the Housing Corporation is continuing to implement northern solutions for northern housing. A crucial element of this approach is working in partnership with other orders of government, such as the Tlicho, to address affordable housing challenges.
Mr. Speaker, the Tlicho Government and the Government of the Northwest...
I want to say, again, that the staff at the LHO offices, local housing organizations, the regional offices, are getting out into the communities. I've instructed them to go out into the communities, let them know what programs are available to them, and make sure that any clients who come in are aware of programs such as the Homelessness Assistance Fund, subsidized rent programs. We also have, as I mentioned, the NGO rental partnership program that will help individuals in such cases. It is on a case-by-case basis, however, and I encourage any families, anyone who is in a situation where they...
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Of course, I'm not. I don't think anybody in this House would feel that way, or even agree to that. I think that, as a government, we try our best to house individuals in the situations that were mentioned. We have a homelessness working group that we're working with to address these issues.
In terms of anybody who is in a situation, as the Member had mentioned in her statement, the NWT Housing Corporation has formed a new partnership, called the NGO Rental Partnership Program, also referred to as rapid re-housing, to support the YWCA, the Yellowknife Women's Society...
As the Member knows, the NWT Housing Corporation has been working with the Aklavik Indian Band for a couple of years now in terms of the planning, looking for a lot, looking for where we can put either a new construction or where we can upgrade a current housing unit. As I mentioned, it is a new construction. We will get the materials there this summer. The building, the northern housing unit, should be complete by December of 2018. We will update the Member on a regular basis. We will also make sure that the Aklavik Indian Band does know this. In terms of the contract, I do believe the...
Not here, on the floor of the House, I cannot provide dates. I will look at my schedule and look at the availability of my senior staff who will be able to come in and chat with leadership, not only leadership but also community organizations, any other non-government organizations, as well, that want to participate in creating options. I know that we had the Yellowknife Women's Centre attend a meeting in Behchoko today, actually, and talk about options for Housing First in Behchoko, and we can do something similar in the other smaller communities. Plus, the program that I mentioned, the...
