Thank you, Madam Chair. I guess if that’s government practice to spend this much money on an 1,800 square foot office location, that to me looks fairly exorbitant, really. I don’t know if there are going to be gold-plated doorknobs or gold-plated toilet seats in this place, but it begs the question of what is the money going to be spent on? One-hundred-fifteen-thousand dollars on an 1,800 square foot office space? It’s an awful lot of money to be spending on an office. Thank you, Madam Chair.
Thank you, Mr. McLeod. Ms. Lee, further questions?
Thank you, Madam Chair. Is the Minister aware of what that portion of the leasehold improvements the landlord will be paying is? Thank you.
Ms. Lee, that is a bit of an aside from what we are talking about, but I will allow the question. Mr. Minister.
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, I find it difficult to imagine that the Minister is unaware of what’s happening in his department in terms of wrongful dismissal suits. I would also like to know what measures are currently underway to get the amount of overtime being paid out at North Slave Correctional Centre under control. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
Thank you, Madam Chair. I guess it’s splitting hairs, but, again, we’re going into this and once you start the renovations at the airport -- and they’ve already been started, Madam Chair -- you enter into the full expenditure and you also have to take into account the cost recovery of that expenditure. I don’t think the Minister’s response was good enough, in my mind, Madam Chair, in terms of what Cabinet’s rationale for proceeding with a project that’s $11.2 million and, by anybody’s best guess, could go off the rails quite easily as other capital projects have and end up costing the...
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, my question today is for the Minister of Justice who, earlier in the sitting of the House, stood up and mentioned the fact that employees at North Slave Correctional Centre could speak out without a fear of retribution from management at that centre. Mr. Speaker, I would like to ask the Minister of Justice if, indeed, employees are being targeted at the North Slave Correctional Centre for conduct that they do in terms of questioning management. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, I am just wondering if the Minister is aware of some concern among employees at the North Slave Correctional Centre, that management does indeed have a list of targeted employees, Mr. Speaker, that they have singled out and that they are going after, Mr. Speaker. Is the Minister aware of this list being in existence? Thank you.
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, I have been getting a number of phone calls and e-mails. One e-mail was even titled "The Department of Injustice," Mr. Speaker. There is a disturbing situation that occurred recently with an employee being terminated at the North Slave Correctional Centre; an employee, Mr. Speaker, that indeed was speaking out against management practices and the hiring process at North Slave Correctional Centre. I find it to be quite a coincidence. A day after he was assaulted by an inmate, he was relieved of his duties as a correctional guard at that centre. It is a...
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to speak about the National Youth Safety Conference hosted by the Workers’ Compensation Board of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. The conference will be held in Yellowknife on October 22nd, today, the 23rd and 24th. Over 110 young people from across the country between the ages of 16 and 24 will be arriving in Yellowknife to sharpen their safety skills in the workplace.
This will be the first National Youth Safety Conference hosted North of 60. The conference is called “What if You Couldn’t.” It’s aimed at instructing young workers...
