Thank you, Mr. Chairman. Just my opening comments with respect to this report. Early in the life of this Assembly, I had constituents start to come to me and talk about concerns that they had with the Child and Family Services Act. Quite frankly, in the beginning I couldn’t tell whether it was problems that we actually had with the act or whether it was problems that we had with the implementation. There were issues that certainly through the review become clear that there are a few gaps in the act. That’s good to hear. We’ve been here before. We’ve had plans to revitalize aboriginal languages in the North before and I think this is a very good one. It’s building upon some of the successes we’ve had in the past.

Over the last 10 years the number of aboriginal people that identify their aboriginal language as their mother tongue has decreased as has the number of people using it in their homes. What I’m curious about, specifically when it comes to an evaluation framework, is will the department be collecting information on mother tongue and home language as well as the ability to diverse so...

I’d like to take this opportunity to applaud the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment for leading his department in the development of the Northwest Territories Aboriginal Languages Plan - A Shared Responsibility. I think this plan is an important step in revitalizing aboriginal languages throughout the Northwest Territories.
