(YELLOWKNIFE) Tuesday, October 28, 2025 – Today, the Report on Committee Project: Housing as a Human Right has been tabled by Jane Weyallon Armstrong, Chair of the Standing Committee on Social Development.
The Standing Committee on Social Development has tabled its report, Housing as a Human Right, in the Legislative Assembly. The report provides advice to the Government of the Northwest Territories on how to implement the right to adequate housing through territorial laws and policies. It reflects extensive engagement with Indigenous governments, housing experts, service providers, and residents across the territory.
The report highlights the urgent and widespread nature of the housing crisis in the Northwest Territories.Nearly half of homes are unsuitable or in need of major repairs, and many communities face limited housing options beyond public housing. The Committee’s study found that systemic barriers continue to prevent residents from accessing safe, adequate, culturally appropriate, and climate-resilient housing.
The Committee has put forward 44 recommendations to guide the Government’s response. These recommendations aim to strengthen housing policy, improve access to safe and adequate housing across the northern housing continuum, and ensure that all residents can live in dignity and security. The Committee looks forward to the Government’s response and to collaborative action that advances housing as a human right in the Northwest Territories.
