Special Committee on Reconciliation and Indigenous Affairs Selects Chair

(YELLOWKNIFE) Tuesday, December 15, 2020 – The Special Committee on Reconciliation and Indigenous Affairs held its inaugural meeting on December 4 2020, and selected Lesa Semmler, MLA for Inuvik Twin Lakes, as Chair.

The Special Committee, established on November 2, 2020, will encourage discussions and recommendations on challenges and opportunities in Aboriginal Rights negotiations, reconciliation, and implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Accountable to the Legislative Assembly, the Special Committee includes members of the Executive Council and Regular Members. They have been tasked to publish a report before the last sitting of the 19th Assembly.

MLA Semmler welcomed that work can now begin. “I am honoured to have been selected as chair of this very important committee.  I realize there will be challenges but I am optimistic,” she said. “I look forward to working with the Special Committee and achieving the goals as mandated.”

“The Special Committee’s next steps will be to develop a workplan and begin the tasks at hand.”
