Statements in Debates
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, I ask these questions to try to bring awareness to cancer and also, at the same time, to the public to be more educated in terms of understanding this plight that affects lots of people in the NWT. The Minister encourages the public to, you know, refer to their website, but, at the same time, not everybody has an opportunity in terms of basic access to the Internet, including the website that he refers to.
Many Northerners volunteer for many different anticancer organizations but can feel frustrated when high cancer rates continue to affect themselves, their...
I'd like to thank the Minister for his reply. At the very minimum, cancer patients that go through the experience of dealing with this condition, at the very minimum, this system should have a care and compassion, and a public system sometimes becomes very impersonal. What is the department currently doing to promote cancer awareness, prevention, and standardized access to screening? The Minister has stated that he's tabled a 10year cancer strategy. Can he please explain in terms of the prevention measures that his department is taking?
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. It's not often I rise up in the House and recognize people, but I'd like to recognize Ernie Abel, the executive director of Tree of Peace and also at the same time Mr. William Greenland, facilitator of A New Day program. Mahsi.
Mahsi, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, I rise today in support of this motion. I'd like to take the opportunity to thank my colleagues that put tremendous effort in ensuring that the report and the motion that was tabled in the House, and what we're seeing today was their greatest effort. I've seen them work many hours and commit themselves to ensuring that it was very reflective of the desires of the House, even to the point of involving Members of Cabinet in those discussions.
The mid-term review I think is a time of reflection. We're going to reach an important juncture in terms of the halfway...
Going forward, building upon the tabling of the 10year cancer strategy, how are Indigenous traditional beliefs reflected in treatment of First Nations patients?
Mahsi, Mr. Speaker. Earlier, I spoke about the month of cancer awareness. Many times, on occasions, we're given the opportunity of trying to raise the awareness, so my questions are to the Minister of Health and Social Services. In the NWT, what services does the department provide for cancer patients from initial diagnoses to treatment and beyond? Mahsi.
Mahsi, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, the month of October is the month to promote awareness of breast cancer and liver cancer. Today I'll use my Member's statement to talk about the presence of cancer in the lives of Northerners. We know that the Northwest Territories performs poorly on many health measurements when they're compared to the rest of Canada. This includes physical activity, daily smoking, heavy drinking and healthy eating. These factors contribute to other health issues, including cancer. In fact, cancer is one of the NWT's top three leading causes of avoidable death. Knowledge is...
Thank you, Mr. Chair. No further questions.
Yes. So, I mean, the reply that the Minister provided and given us a sure indication that the project in terms of the lease space perhaps was six metres by six metres or so for a probation officer, and that is supposed to be completed by 2017, is that also indicating that the position will run until 2017 or 2018? Thank you.
Thank you, Mr. Chair. I'd like to thank the Minister for clarifying that. Just in terms of long-term, I just wanted to come to an understanding: what is the plan of the Department of Justice in terms of working to ensure that this probation officer working on the K’atlodeeche Reserve in the future plans in terms of long-term; whether indeed a fully staffed person could be resident from the reserve and for the reserve? Thank you.
