Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Monument
Dedicated to victims, survivors, and affected families of violence against Indigenous women and girls, this space serves as a tribute for remembrance, reflection, and intergenerational healing.

- The Red Parka symbolizes Northern culture, honouring the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
- The Dene Drum represents the Dene.
- Feathers formed into an infinity symbol represent the Metis.
- The Qulliq (oil lamp) symbolizes the Inuvialuit and Inuit people, also serving a functional purpose.
- The infinity is adorned with Hearts reflects the Native Women’s Association of the Northwest Territories’ efforts to raise awareness.
The Legislative Assembly unveiled the monument on October 4, 2023. Thoughtfully designed by Inuvialuit artist Myrna Pokiak, it serves as a sacred place for families to sit with their loved ones, honour those who have fallen, and recognize the injustices experienced by Indigenous women, girls, and 2-spirited people.
A permanent, sacred space to raise awareness and honour those impacted by this ongoing national tragedy.
Fire Lighting Schedule
On select days throughout the year, a fire is lit at the monument as a symbol of remembrance and solidarity.
Visitors are welcome to spend time at the monument in a way that is meaningful to them. Benches are available for quiet reflection.
Please be mindful that this is a place of remembrance and respect.
Fire is lit at 9:00 AM and remains active until 12:00 PM, weather permitting.
