Thursday, May 28, 2026 – Today the Speaker tabled an audit report prepared by the Office of the Auditor General of Canada (OAG) on Child and Family Services in the Northwest Territories. The audit examined the level of services provided by the Department of Health and Social Services, the NWT Health and Social Services Authority, the Tłı̨chǫ Community Services Agency, and the Hay River Health and Social Services Authority from April 1, 2024 to August 31, 2025 to determine whether adequate services to protect and support the well-being of children and youth and their families are being provided.
As part of its mandate to examine the OAG’s audits and assess its recommendations, the Standing Committee on Public Accounts will now begin a detailed review of the audit report. The Committee’s review will be informed by previous audits of Child and Family Services by the OAG, most recently in 2018, and the Committee will focus on what progress has been made by the Department and authorities to implement past audit recommendations. “I thank the Office of the Auditor General for their diligent work completing this performance audit,” said Kieron Testart, MLA for Range Lake and Chair of the Committee. “The Committee recognizes the serious nature of the audit’s findings and is extremely concerned that many issues raised during previous audits in 2014 and 2018 still persist. The Committee will prioritize its review of the audit and will conduct the review with the seriousness and respect that the subject deserves.”
