Statements in Debates

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 29)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Earlier today, I spoke about the planning study for the replacement of the Fort Simpson Health Centre. Mr. Speaker, I would like to ask the Minister of Health and Social Services a few more questions about this project. Mr. Speaker, it is my understanding that the Department of Public Works and Services has already gone into the community in 2015 to discuss this project. Can the Minister please provide us with an update on this meeting? Marci cho, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 29)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker, and I thank the Minister for his answer. Is there any work being done right now on the site that involves fencing off areas? Because I've heard there's a fenced-off area there. I apologize; it was just a question that I've just come up with right now. Is the Minister aware of that and, Mr. Speaker, can he answer if it's been there and what's going on with that site?

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 29)

Mr. Speaker, a study for the Fort Simpson Health Centre was introduced in the 20-year needs assessment, targeted over the 2013-2014, 2014-2015, and 2015-2016. On February 5, 2015 according to then Minister of Health and Social Services, the study was delayed so that the department can complete a plan study for the Norman Wells Health Centre replacement. Will the Minister confirm that the study for the Fort Simpson Health Centre will be completed by this fiscal year? Mahsi cho, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 28)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, yesterday we heard the Minister of Transportation speak about saving $2 million on a contract in my riding. Mr. Speaker, can the Minister please tell us if he actually spoke to the two companies about the cost of them operating this contract as a negotiated contract? Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 28)

Mr. Speaker, further to the petition I delivered to this House earlier this afternoon, I wish to table correspondence from the Fort Simpson Chamber of Commerce regarding extended hours of service for the MV Lafferty Ferry. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 28)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, I have a written question to the Minister of Transportation.

Would the Minister provide the following information?

What is the total amount spent on capital projects on Highway No. 1 since 2011-2012, including the winter road section?

Which company, both northern and southern owned have been awarded capital contracts on Highway No. 1 since 2011-2012, including the winter road section and what was the process for selecting them?

How many companies requested negotiated contracts from the Department of Transportation between November 2015 and June 2016? and;

How...

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 28)

I thank the Minister for that answer and it’s good to hear that. Mr. Speaker, in speaking with some of the residents and youths that recycle bottles because they receive a refund from the deposit they make during the purchase of the items, can the Speaker advise if the department has any plans in the future to provide any refunds for recycling electronics?

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 28)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker, and I thank the Minister for the education about the BIP process. I totally understand the BIP process; what I’m asking for the Minister to explain how the department guarantees, when Southern company says they’re going to put 60 per cent of the cost to Northerners so the money is vested back into the communities, how does the department guarantee as part of the bid or contract when they sign it, because that’s what they bid on, is adhered to? Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 28)

I thank the Minister for his answer. Mr. Speaker, if the Minister of the department hasn’t spoken to these companies I’m not sure how we saved $2 million by going to a public tender process. To me, if it’s a negotiated contract you work out a price, but he didn’t do that so we can’t really say that we saved $2 million. Mr. Speaker, can the Minister please explain how we saved $2 million with this project going out to a public tender?

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 28)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Today I would like to take this opportunity to speak about an organization in Fort Simpson that has a huge impact in the arts, culture, and entertainment community across the North. I’ve had the opportunity to witness this organization grow from its first breath some 16 years ago to where it is today. Open Sky Society has a long history in Fort Simpson in Nahendeh. Open Sky will be hosting its 16th Annual Open Sky Festival this July. This event brings multiple benefits to the village of Fort Simpson and the businesses in the region. The festival is a tourist draw and...
