Statements in Debates

Debates of , 20th Assembly, 1st Session (day 59)

Colleagues, Fort Simpson is fortunate to have participants in sports programs step up and new coaches developing athletes. These youth are stepping up, volunteering their time, and giving back to younger kids so they can learn new motor skills, have opportunities, build relationship skills, and travel. They are great role models for the younger generation as they are leaders and supports for these athletes. They prepare coaching plans, run practices, give feedback, fundraise, organize travel and accommodation, enter competitions, and spend hours supporting the kids they coach. They exemplify...

Thank you. Please be seated. I'd like to thank Mary Jane Cazon for the opening prayer and reflection.

Debates of , 20th Assembly, 1st Session (day 58)

Colleagues, on Monday my Member's statements will be about three amazing young ladies from Fort Simpson who are giving back to their community. Today I would like to talk about a couple of other amazing people from the community of Fort Liard.

Roslyn Firth and her husband returned to the community to help the hamlet of Fort Liard. Roslyn took on the role of helping run the community's recreation and youth department. One of her main goals were to help train a local person to take over. I am proud to say as of April 1st, 2025, Holly Fantasque is the manager of recreation and youth programs for...

Debates of , 20th Assembly, 1st Session (day 58)

Thank you very much, Suzie Napayok. Please be seated.

Colleagues, before we get going here, I want to talk to a couple things. One, when we're asking questions, short preamble. Second and third questions, to the point. Ministers, short and precise answers, please. So we can all work together for the people of the Northwest Territories. So thank you.

Member from Hay River South.

Debates of , 20th Assembly, 1st Session (day 57)

Thank you very much, George Suluk, for opening guiding words.

Debates of , 20th Assembly, 1st Session (day 57)

Colleagues, on May 1st I had the opportunity to preside over the 2025 Youth Parliament. I have to say it was a great to witness these young people be MLAs. Today, I have the pleasure of sharing the Member from the Nahendeh, Payton Bennet, statement.

I am speaking to you today about the inadequacies I have seen regarding facilities, access to training, and insufficient space in our smaller communities compared to the bigger centers like Yellowknife, Hay River, Inuvik, and Fort Smith.

Today I'm speaking for youth athletes. I've done a variety of sports that are available throughout the different...

Debates of , 20th Assembly, 1st Session (day 56)

Colleagues, Dr. Earl Leslie Covert passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at the age of 86 years. His family, while spread across Canada, has grown to include 13 great-grandchildren who are all under the age of nine years old. While these are the blood relations he left behind, there are dozens of people and families who called him a father, a grandfather, and a friend. He was predeceased by his first wife, Audrey, in 2016.

Doctor Covert was born on June 21st, 1938, in Ottawa, graduating Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, and moved...

Debates of , 20th Assembly, 1st Session (day 55)

Colleagues, this past weekend, February 28th to March 2nd, was a very busy weekend for me. As you are all aware, the King Charles III Coronation Medal presentation happened Friday evening with the Premier, Commissioner, Senator and MP and recipients that were in Yellowknife. I would like to recognize the people that were nominated from the Nahendeh Riding.

Nominated by the Premier: Deneze James Nakehk'o, Lucy Jane Simon, and Soham Srimani

Nominated by the Senator: Chief Kele Antoine, Gilbert Cazon, and our own Mary Jane Cazon

Debates of , 20th Assembly, 1st Session (day 54)

Colleagues, the Tom Longboat Award was established in 1951 to recognize Indigenous athletes for their outstanding contributions to sport in Canada. The awards have been given out every year since its inauguration. It remains the longest standing and one of the most prestigious awards for Indigenous athletes in the country. Each province and territory is given the opportunity to name one man and one woman recipient of the regional Tom Longboat Award.

I would like to congratulate both James Williams and Shakita Jensen for receiving this year's award. It is a great honour to see both received this...

Debates of , 20th Assembly, 1st Session (day 53)

Thank you, elder Annie Goose.

Colleagues, on February 28th, 2025, the Member from Yellowknife North rose on a point of order regarding comments made by the Member from Yellowknife Centre. I will not repeat those comments today; however, I am prepared to deliver my ruling at this time.

As your Speaker, I find that our rules were broken and there was a valid point of order raised by the Member for Yellowknife North.

Although the words spoken by the Member for Yellowknife Centre were not captured on our microphones or recorded in Hansard, they were clearly heard in the chambers. Colleagues, I do not...
