(YELLOWKNIFE) Tuesday, June 4, 2024 – The Standing Committee on Social Development has formally requested the Minister of Health and Social Services to pause the rollout of changes to the Extended Health Benefits Program. The Committee has raised concerns about the financial impacts, public confusion, and the lack of cost-benefit analysis data from the Department regarding these changes. They need detailed financial information and have noted contradictory messages about benefits caps. The Committee urges the Minister to pause the changes until the issues with the proposed changes to the program are resolved. They look forward to the Minister's response.
"We believe it is crucial to address these concerns thoroughly before moving forward with any changes to the Extended Health Benefits Program," said MLA Weyallon Armstrong, Committee Chair. "Our priority is to ensure that the changes do not negatively impact the residents who rely on these benefits."
Deputy Chair, MLA George Nerysoo added, "We need to have a clear and comprehensive understanding of the financial implications and ensure that public messaging is consistent and transparent. Pausing the rollout will allow the Government to gather necessary data and engage with federal health authorities effectively."
