Députée de Great Slave

Kate Reid a été élue députée de la circonscription de Great Slave à la 20e Assemblée législative des Territoires du Nord-Ouest.

Mme Reid est née à Oshawa (Ontario) en 1981 et habite Yellowknife depuis 1989. Elle est titulaire d’un baccalauréat en journalisme de l’Université métropolitaine de Toronto (2003) et d’une maîtrise en sciences de l’information de l’Université de Toronto (2009).

À la fin de sa maîtrise, elle a rejoint les Archives des TNO, où elle a travaillé près de dix ans. C’est là qu’a germé sa passion pour la préservation et le partage des histoires qui peignent le portrait de notre territoire et de son gouvernement. En 2018, Mme Reid a pris un poste au ministère de l’Environnement et des Ressources naturelles et, dans le cadre de ses fonctions, elle s’est concentrée sur les questions de conservation et de développement durable dans les domaines législatif et politique, et ce, jusqu’à son élection comme députée.

Mme Reid a été présidente de la YWCA des TNO de 2021 à 2023 et de la section locale 40 du Syndicat des travailleurs du Nord en 2019 et de 2021 à 2023. Son leadership s’étend au domaine culturel, Kate Reid ayant été directrice de Folk on the Rocks, le festival de musique bien-aimé de Yellowknife, qui existe depuis longtemps. En outre, elle a contribué à des événements communautaires tels que NWT Pride, Yellowknife Pride et l’ancien spectacle d’art, Burn on the Bay.

En dehors de sa vie professionnelle, Kate Reid est mariée et trouve réconfort et inspiration dans toute une gamme de passe-temps; elle affectionne particulièrement la musique, l’art, le burlesque, le drag, le cinéma, l’haltérophilie et les voyages.

Yeah, thank you. And I respect that quite deeply. I recognize that it's kind of a -- you know, you have a certain mandate and you can't really escape that mandate. But I think some of the resources that justice has, and some of the training opportunities that justice has, there is some opportunity for cross-pollination, perhaps, around training, trauma-related supports. It just -- in any way that we can -- and I don't -- we say this so much in this House and I don't know if it has any meaning anymore, but thinking outside of the box around how we're supporting people who are trying to heal...

Member’s Statement 567-20(1): Food Security and Community Gardens

Mr. Speaker, I'm excited for the upcoming growing season. For many years, I've had a kitchen garden to grow fresh food for my family and friends. I have so much rhubarb that I have an annual callout for people to come and harvest some. I've spent time, effort, and testing my husband's good graces in creating raised beds and raising a greenhouse to grow fresh food in the Midnight Sun.

Mr. Speaker, with tariffs now looming over our head, food security is more crucial than ever before. I think we could bring back the positive tradition of our grandparents and great grandparents of victory gardens...

And can the Minister tell me if there were concerns about diseased animals aside from contacting obviously an ECC officer in your region to report dead birds, is there any foresight or planning around whether or not we will be hearing more public information if, indeed, there becomes a bigger issue around this Avian flu? Thank you, Madam Chair. And yeah, no, that's perfect. I didn't expect the Minister to rattle off all that data right now, but thank you very much. It does paint a little bit of a picture of how often we're getting out and monitoring those herds. I'm just curious specifically because the dollar amount for range planning is fairly static since last year, but in the 2023-2024 actuals they're much higher. Caribou monitoring slightly decreased but not significantly so. So, yeah, more information about what is planned for the coming year is most appreciated.
