Députée de Great Slave

Kate Reid a été élue députée de la circonscription de Great Slave à la 20e Assemblée législative des Territoires du Nord-Ouest.

Mme Reid est née à Oshawa (Ontario) en 1981 et habite Yellowknife depuis 1989. Elle est titulaire d’un baccalauréat en journalisme de l’Université métropolitaine de Toronto (2003) et d’une maîtrise en sciences de l’information de l’Université de Toronto (2009).

À la fin de sa maîtrise, elle a rejoint les Archives des TNO, où elle a travaillé près de dix ans. C’est là qu’a germé sa passion pour la préservation et le partage des histoires qui peignent le portrait de notre territoire et de son gouvernement. En 2018, Mme Reid a pris un poste au ministère de l’Environnement et des Ressources naturelles et, dans le cadre de ses fonctions, elle s’est concentrée sur les questions de conservation et de développement durable dans les domaines législatif et politique, et ce, jusqu’à son élection comme députée.

Mme Reid a été présidente de la YWCA des TNO de 2021 à 2023 et de la section locale 40 du Syndicat des travailleurs du Nord en 2019 et de 2021 à 2023. Son leadership s’étend au domaine culturel, Kate Reid ayant été directrice de Folk on the Rocks, le festival de musique bien-aimé de Yellowknife, qui existe depuis longtemps. En outre, elle a contribué à des événements communautaires tels que NWT Pride, Yellowknife Pride et l’ancien spectacle d’art, Burn on the Bay.

En dehors de sa vie professionnelle, Kate Reid est mariée et trouve réconfort et inspiration dans toute une gamme de passe-temps; elle affectionne particulièrement la musique, l’art, le burlesque, le drag, le cinéma, l’haltérophilie et les voyages.

Switching gears ever so slightly and moving into wildlife, I notice that the contributions on page 106, caribou monitoring, remote sensing, monitoring and range planning, all of these line items are reducing. Could the Minister please speak to whether, you know, that's sort of just a cyclical nature of range planning and monitoring herds or if there's more funding that needs to be found in this area? So under the business plan, one of the actions to support economic activities includes supporting a forest industry development, and I note that over time -- sorry, had it here a moment ago.

Yes, I do. Okay, so in 2022-2023, it was $75,000. 2023-2024 it was $50,000. And now it's reduced again to $25,000. So I guess my question to the Minister is, you know, how are we going to support a forest industry with a diminishing budget line? Thank you, Mr. Chair.

I guess my followup question would be that number has remained static, and I understand a little bit of static throughout time before what's actually reflected on this page for several years now, and I notice too that it's going down by about $112,000. I think my questions with the Minister of MACA previously in this session is really just pointing to trying to align, wherever we can, services that are in a onestopshop sort of style for the public to understand when there are issues, and that includes obviously egress from various places in evacuations. Yeah, thank you, Madam Chair. And, you know, I do appreciate the push and pull that I have had with the Minister of Finance on this prior to my even being an MLA. I do know that she genuinely cares about the public service and I do want to, you know, remark on that publicly because it's really refreshing to see, honestly. What I would suggest is more initiatives where you're seeking employee input. Like, the 1800, 1900 suggestions I think that you got is a good place to start.
