Kate Reid

Députée de Great Slave

Kate Reid a été élue députée de la circonscription de Great Slave à la 20e Assemblée législative des Territoires du Nord-Ouest.

Mme Reid est née à Oshawa (Ontario) en 1981 et habite Yellowknife depuis 1989. Elle est titulaire d’un baccalauréat en journalisme de l’Université métropolitaine de Toronto (2003) et d’une maîtrise en sciences de l’information de l’Université de Toronto (2009).

À la fin de sa maîtrise, elle a rejoint les Archives des TNO, où elle a travaillé près de dix ans. C’est là qu’a germé sa passion pour la préservation et le partage des histoires qui peignent le portrait de notre territoire et de son gouvernement. En 2018, Mme Reid a pris un poste au ministère de l’Environnement et des Ressources naturelles et, dans le cadre de ses fonctions, elle s’est concentrée sur les questions de conservation et de développement durable dans les domaines législatif et politique, et ce, jusqu’à son élection comme députée.

Mme Reid a été présidente de la YWCA des TNO de 2021 à 2023 et de la section locale 40 du Syndicat des travailleurs du Nord en 2019 et de 2021 à 2023. Son leadership s’étend au domaine culturel, Kate Reid ayant été directrice de Folk on the Rocks, le festival de musique bien-aimé de Yellowknife, qui existe depuis longtemps. En outre, elle a contribué à des événements communautaires tels que NWT Pride, Yellowknife Pride et l’ancien spectacle d’art, Burn on the Bay.

En dehors de sa vie professionnelle, Kate Reid est mariée et trouve réconfort et inspiration dans toute une gamme de passe-temps; elle affectionne particulièrement la musique, l’art, le burlesque, le drag, le cinéma, l’haltérophilie et les voyages.

Mr. Speaker, last week, the Yukon Government and Canada announced up to $100 million in funding to the Yukon housing corporation who will then distribute $93 million to build up 500 new homes. I know the Premier spoke to 360 homes being developed in this Assembly. Can he elaborate if the NWT is anticipating to see any matching federal dollar announcements to start to address the continued crucial needs for our housing, especially for those who are under-housed and inadequately housed. Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, we cannot be fully prepared in accessing opportunities for all residents of the NWT without helping some residents heal. Can the Premier tell me what counselling options, on the land or otherwise, does he discuss as needed and urgent with his Indigenous government counterparts at the Council of Leaders and bilateral meetings. Mr. Speaker, I truly appreciated all of the commentary that came from the mover and seconder's town hall; specifically, the comments that NWT RCMP Chief Superintendent Dyson Smith shared with those present, including Cabin Radio. And I want to take most of my time speaking to this motion to share some of the chief superintendent's comments from an article that was published earlier today because I believe they are important.

Madam Chair, in November and December of 2025, the committee received correspondence from Speaker Thompson requesting a review of certain rules of the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly. Specifically, the committee was asked to consider time allowed for closing debate, length of time for oral questions, the role of the Speaker when a Member proposes an emergency debate, and if the rules should be changed to clarify process regarding reporting bills that have been referred to a standing committee for consideration. Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I too want to join in gratitude for the interpreters and the wonderful work they do to keep our languages alive and shared with the people of the Northwest Territories. I also want to thank the broadcast team who also puts in long hours to make sure we're heard. And I want to thank all of the table staff, the clerk staff, the speaker's office staff, and the Ministers' staff who, indeed, keeps this building running smoothly and makes it all look very magical indeed.
