Députée de Great Slave

Kate Reid a été élue députée de la circonscription de Great Slave à la 20e Assemblée législative des Territoires du Nord-Ouest.

Mme Reid est née à Oshawa (Ontario) en 1981 et habite Yellowknife depuis 1989. Elle est titulaire d’un baccalauréat en journalisme de l’Université métropolitaine de Toronto (2003) et d’une maîtrise en sciences de l’information de l’Université de Toronto (2009).

À la fin de sa maîtrise, elle a rejoint les Archives des TNO, où elle a travaillé près de dix ans. C’est là qu’a germé sa passion pour la préservation et le partage des histoires qui peignent le portrait de notre territoire et de son gouvernement. En 2018, Mme Reid a pris un poste au ministère de l’Environnement et des Ressources naturelles et, dans le cadre de ses fonctions, elle s’est concentrée sur les questions de conservation et de développement durable dans les domaines législatif et politique, et ce, jusqu’à son élection comme députée.

Mme Reid a été présidente de la YWCA des TNO de 2021 à 2023 et de la section locale 40 du Syndicat des travailleurs du Nord en 2019 et de 2021 à 2023. Son leadership s’étend au domaine culturel, Kate Reid ayant été directrice de Folk on the Rocks, le festival de musique bien-aimé de Yellowknife, qui existe depuis longtemps. En outre, elle a contribué à des événements communautaires tels que NWT Pride, Yellowknife Pride et l’ancien spectacle d’art, Burn on the Bay.

En dehors de sa vie professionnelle, Kate Reid est mariée et trouve réconfort et inspiration dans toute une gamme de passe-temps; elle affectionne particulièrement la musique, l’art, le burlesque, le drag, le cinéma, l’haltérophilie et les voyages.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. On May 30th of this year, NTHSSA released a report that has yet to be discussed in this House. Today I want to talk about this report entitled Honouring the Voices of Indigenous Peoples. It is the product of two years of collaborative work of the Cultural Safety Design Collective with representation from NTHSSA, Indigenous patient advocates, Hay River HSSA, Tlicho Community Services Agency, and HSS.

Thank you, Madam Chair. Yeah, and I can appreciate that perhaps that's just a random ask, but I guess the point behind my question is it's not an insignificant amount of money. Obviously, our residents need to have out of territory services; obviously, we budget for that. Perhaps a better question would be, does the department have substantiation or trends that they're noticing in terms of increases in this regard? Thank you, Madam Chair.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I'm really glad to hear the Minister spoke with the Indigenous patient advocates and had a good half day session. That's really positive to hear. And that she's taken the time to review the report herself. Can the Minister tell me if there are any actions in the report that she sees that are not going to be implemented and, if so, why? Motion 61-20(1): Remuneration of Essential Staff During an Evacuation, Carried

Mr. Speaker, like other folks before me, I really do appreciate the intention behind this motion. As you recall, my questions yesterday spoke to the needs of elders and folks with disabilities in evacuation, and I mean I think this is top of mind for a lot of us. I also appreciate the context that was provided by the finance Minister just now. The resources that we have are stretched, and our pockets are not endless. The surplus has dropped by $150 million. So I can see both sides of the equation, Mr. Speaker.

Mr. Speaker, the NWT lacks robust newcomer supports. Without appropriate services, newcomers are deterred from choosing to remain in the NWT. Providing those services is top of mind for organizations like CDETNO, FFT, and the Literacy Council. I know the Minister knows this, and she speaks with them. Can she confirm as to whether in her conversations with these support organizations, who have flagged key services for newcomers that lack adequate funding, whether these services will be addressed by her department or federal funding partners.
